Indian Education Parent Committee
UPDATE
In response to a public notice that was posted at locations throughout Nenana, and that went home with students, a group of parents and guardians of Native students met at Nenana City School on April 16, 2008. The notice read as follows:
April 14, 2008
Dear Parent or Guardian of a Native American Student:
On Wednesday, April 16 there will be a meeting of Nenana School’s Indian Education Parent Committee. The meeting will take place in the lobby of the school at 6:30.
There are two purposes to the meeting:
1. To provide a place where we can discuss the needs of our Native students
2. To go over the Indian Education Grant in order to get funding for next year
Thanks in advance for attending this meeting!
There were nine people who expressed interest and attended this meeting.
Over the past two years several members of Nenana’s Native community have communicated that a Nenana Indian Education Parent Committee is either non-operative or defunct. They expressed a desire for an active committee.
On April 16, 2008 a Nenana Indian Education Parent Committee was elected. The members are:
Karen Kriska: Chairperson
Matt O’Brien: Vice-Chairperson
Lily O’Brien: Secretary
Jennie Irwin: Elder/Mentor
Donna Mather: Educator
Thank you to these members! We appreciate their willingness to volunteer their time to help ensure equity and achievement for Nenana’s Native students.
